About Dr. Ron Ellis

Professional Training and Experience

I have been in private practice since 1993, providing individual, marital and family therapy for adults, adolescents and children. I earned both a Masters and Doctorate in clinical psychology from Nova Southeastern University. My Doctoral Internship was at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital. I obtained my Bachelors degree in psychology from Dartmouth College.

I have also worked in a community mental health center, as a house parent for emotionally disturbed adolescent boys, a caseworker for chronically mentally ill geriatric patients, and in the Miami-Dade school system working with intellectually challenged, emotionally disturbed children, adolescents and their families.

Shortly after September 11, 2001 my wife, Dr Marti Schwartz, and I began volunteering with the American Red Cross providing Disaster Mental Health (DMH) services to disaster survivors. Some of our duties as volunteers have included providing DMH services to survivors of house fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and airplane crashes. Additionally we both have taught Psychological First Aid and Disaster Mental Health Fundamentals to other Red Cross volunteers and Licensed Mental Health Providers. Eventually we served as Co Leads of the DMH team for the southern region of Florida, basically south of Orlando to key west. In that capacity we were responsible for training and supervising 60+ licensed mental health professionals to support approximately 6 million Floridians. We ‘retired’ from our volunteer positions with the American Red Cross after 15 years of service.

I have volunteered for over 12 years for the Broward County Public School system, providing individual and family therapy, as well as being a room parent.

I have been a member of the Florida Medical Reserve corps since 2008

I am also Member of the American Psychological Association, Florida Psychological Association, and the Broward County Psychological Association.

Choosing a Psychotherapist

By Dr. Ron Ellis

It can be a daunting task to find a good psychotherapist. The two most important factors in choosing a good therapist are whether you and the therapist are a ‘good fit’ and if the therapist has experience in helping others with challenges similar to the ones you are struggling with.
